Galen McKinley

(From Mason-Woodard Mortuary)

Galen Dean McKinley, age 81 of Joplin, MO, died Wednesday, March 19, 2025, at the Solace House following an illness.

Galen was born on September 4, 1943, in Hutchinson, KS., the son of Hugh and Carmen (Morgan) McKinley. The family moved to Joplin, where Galen competed in Speech & Debate, Math Club, and was a ROTC Minuteman Commander at Joplin High School. Galen graduated from Joplin High School in 1961. While newly married and raising two young children, Galen continued his education, earning a Master's degree in Biology from Pittsburgh State University, in 1965.

Galen taught at Joplin High School the Joplin RVIII school district for thirty-one years, from 1963 to 1996. During his teaching career, he taught Biology, and Human Anatomy and Physiology, preparing many students for future careers in medicine and the sciences. Galen was an ardent advocator for teachers’ rights and was president of Joplin National Education Association for many years.

Galen’s passion for education and nature was infectious, as he would always find teachable moments where he could educate a person about the wonders of the natural world. Throughout his life, Galen relished time with his two children and grandchildren; enjoyed camping, hiking, traveling and square dancing; worked as a volunteer for Habitat Restore; and stayed in touch with many of the students he'd taught over the years. He also enjoyed posting unusual holidays on Facebook daily. He also was an animal lover, owning several dogs throughout his life who were close companions.

He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Mary McKinley Anderson, his parents, his brother Gordon McKinley, his son, Kevin McKinley, MD, and by a grandson, Fletcher Dean Micklethwaite.

Galen is survived by his daughter; Christine Ashley Micklethwaite of Joplin, and by his grandchildren; Kendal Micklethwaite, Ian Micklethwaite, Michael McKinley, Megan McKinley and Erin McKinley.

A memorial service has been scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Monday, March 24, 2025, at the Mason-Woodard Chapel. The family will receive friends during a time of visitation immediately following the service.
