(From Nichols-Stephens Funeral Home)Clyde William Whitman, age 81, passed into the arms of his Lord and Savior on March 16, 2025, at his home in Grove, Oklahoma. He was born on November 7, 1943, in Neosho, Missouri, to Clyde and Ellena (Surridge) Whitman.
A proud graduate of Neosho High School, Clyde dedicated his career to working with explosives, working at the Atlas Explosive plant in Joplin, Missouri, and managing Atlas Powder in Ohio as well. He retired in 1992 following an injury. His work was not only a profession but a passion, marked by a commitment to safety and innovation.
Clyde was a devoted husband to his high school sweetheart, Berneva Naylor, whom he married on December 20, 1961. He was also a loving father and grandfather. He had a big heart and a kind soul who always made himself available when needed by family or friends. He was Baptist in faith.
He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed deer hunting and fishing. He spent countless hours in his shop, tinkering and working on mowers, a hobby that allowed him to engage his mechanical skills and love for hands-on activities.
He is survived by his wife Berneva, two children, Randy Whitman (Nancy) of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Theresa Oglesby of Springfield, Missouri; grandchildren, Nicholas and Nathaniel Whitman; and his sister, Gaylin Whitman of Fresno, California. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Donnie and Timmy Whitman; an infant sister; and his son-in-law, Phil Oglesby.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in memory of Clyde, whose generosity and kindness touched many lives. His legacy of love, dedication, and spirited enthusiasm for life will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A graveside service will be held at 11 am on Thursday, March 27, 2025, at Olympus Cemetery North. Nichols-Stephens Funeral & Cremation Services in Grove, Oklahoma, is assisting the family.
