Doris Long

(From Clark Funeral Home)

Doris Jean Long, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on March 23, 2025, at Oak Pointe of Neosho in Neosho, MO, at the age of 83.

Born on March 7, 1942, in Sioux City, IA, Doris was the daughter of Bernard and Violet Grace (Petit) Bassett. Raised in Sioux City, she lived a full and adventurous life, marked by a deep love for her family, her faith, and her community.

Doris was a devoted member of the Presbyterian faith and found comfort and peace attending chapel at Oak Pointe. Her love of family and tradition was evident in the joy she found in celebrating Christmas, her favorite holiday. She would spend hours shopping for her family and preparing their favorite meals. Doris especially loved the fall, drawn to the changing colors of the leaves that mirrored her warmth and beauty.

A military wife, Doris lived in various locations throughout the years, but it was in Colorado where she put down roots, raising her family and attending nursing school. Doris was a natural caregiver, a gift that guided her throughout her life. She spent many years at Lutheran Medical Center in Wheat Ridge, Colorado, where she became known for her gentle spirit and unwavering dedication to her patients. Doris retired as a nurse, but her compassionate care touched countless lives.

Doris was also a survivor in the truest sense. As a child, she bravely overcame polio, a recovery she always credited to the love and support of her Aunt Dolly and Aunt Jean. She carried that resilience with her through her life, always ready to offer a kind word, a comforting presence, or a helping hand to those in need.

In her free time, Doris enjoyed gardening, singing hymns, and spending time with her loved ones. She was also known as the family prankster, a skill she inherited from her Aunt Dolly, always bringing laughter and light into her family's lives. Doris loved to cook, especially her famous goulash and French fries, and took great joy in passing down family recipes to her children and grandchildren.

Doris is survived by her children: Don Schlough, Margaret F. "Peggy" Davis, James Leroy Schlough, and Timothy R. Schlough; her grandchildren: Zachary Hale (Jamie) Davis, Ashley Nicole (Cliff) Bott, Charlotte Marie Schlough, James D. Schlough, Jesse Mendel (Evelyn) Davis, and Jade Danielle (Bobby) Bledsoe; and her great-grandchildren: Ruby Jolene Bott, Callie Ryann Bott, Levi Michael Davis, Tera May Davis, Makenna Lee Davis, Brooklyn Hale Davis, Trenton Davis, Amelia Davis, Gabriel Bledsoe, Selah Bledsoe, Karis Bledsoe, and Emma Bledsoe.

She is also survived by her siblings: Robert (Gail) Bassett, Mary (Louie) Sprenger, Kathleen (Jim Lants) Thomas, and David Bassett. Doris was preceded in death by her brother, Donald Bassett, and her beloved aunts, Dolly Petit and Jean Petit.

A private family service will be held to celebrate Doris' life at a later date.

Doris will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering faith will live on in the hearts of her family and friends forever.
