Roberta Ferguson

(From Derfelt Funeral Home)

Roberta Ann Ferguson, 80, of Joplin, MO, passed away March 10, 2025 surrounded by family in Independence, MO after a months long battle with pancreatic cancer.

She was born in Denver, Colorado, on January 24th 1945, daughter of the late Thomas and Jewell Trimble. She is survived by her siblings, Sue, Thomas, Lonnie, Dorothy and Rose, her children, Robert Ferguson, Charlotte Smith and Karen Ferguson, grandchildren Nicole, Debbie, Steven, Brandon, Peter, Peyton, Krista, Harley and Honda, and 10 great grandchildren along with numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her beloved late husband Standley Leon Ferguson, her daughter Sandra Case, siblings Jean, Don and Debbie.

Roberta was raised on a farm in Hutchison, KS along with her many siblings where she learned to work hard and take care of others. She graduated from Joplin High School in 1963 and briefly attended college. Roberta and Standley Ferguson were married in 1969 in Miami, OK, before he tragically passed away in an accident on August 17th 1973.

She had many occupations throughout the years including working in a munitions plant, as a bartender, a machine operator and forklift driver for Leggett and Platt, before retiring in 2008. During retirement she worked with Visiting Angels, spent time with her extended family, collected antiques, solved puzzles and went to play bingo or out to a casino. When her daughter Sandy fell ill and had her own bout with cancer, she dropped everything to be by her side.

She was a hard worker, a gambler, a skeptic, a rock n roller and she was fiercely independent. She was a fantastic dancer and loved the music of Elvis Presley. She enjoyed making things with her hands and she sewed and quilted many blankets and pillows for her family. She wasn’t often without a cup of black coffee, a lit cigarette and a raised eyebrow.

An avid reader of romance novels and legal thrillers, she nurtured a passion for reading in many of her children and grandchildren. A quick wit, and always ready with a sarcastic comment, she was equally a straight shooter that wouldn’t spare your feelings. Roberta gave everything she had to those she loved. She will be missed dearly by her family.

A Graveside Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, March 19, 2025 at Oak Hill Cemetery of Galena, KS. Arrangements are under the direction of Derfelt Funeral Home of Galena.
