Mary Belle (Ritchie) Phillips, 92, former Parsons resident, died at Saturday evening, June 30, 2018 at the Via Christi Village in Manhattan.
She was born March 14, 1926 on a farm near Carthage, Missouri to Earl and Maudie (Thorn) Ritchie. She moved to Oswego with her parents in 1942. There she met Lyle Phillips and they were married June 20, 1944 at the First Baptist Church in Oswego.
They made their home in Parsons from 1950 to 1967, and again after Lyle’s retirement in 1983. They were married 68 years until Lyle’s passing on November 28, 2012. They had three children, Sarah Osborn (John) of Ocala, Florida, Doug Phillips (Susan) of Newberry, Florida and Craig Phillips (Kelly) of Spokane Valley, Washington. There are three grandchildren, Erin Mortensen of Columbus, Georgia, Jeffrey Osborn of Baltimore, Maryland and Patrick Phillips of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle; brothers Max and Donald Ritchie and sisters Ruby Pruitt, Betty Davolt Rude and Vera Mathis.
Mary Belle was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Parsons, where she enjoyed assisting with dinners and other events. She was a member of the Hobby Club and enjoyed table games, crafts and reading. She was known for her sewing, quilting and crafting skills, and for her gooseberry pie. She had many friends and will be missed by all who knew her.
Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m., Friday, at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Parsons. The service will conclude at the funeral home and a private burial will follow in Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Parsons. Memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church of Parsons. They may be left at or sent to the funeral home at Box 942, Parsons, KS 67357.
