William Aaron (Bill) Horrell passed away May 23, 2017. He was born June 13, 1937 to William Paul Horrell and Maude Giger Horrell. He graduated from Sarcoxie High School in 1955 and attended Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State University) in Springfield and graduated in 1960 with a degree in marketing and management.
He was a member of Sigma Pi Fraternity. He spent four years in ROTC receiving his commission upon graduation. He then graduated from Officers Basic Training at Ft. Benning, Ga., and was assigned to Ft. Hood, Texas, as a training officer for two years. After he finished active duty, he worked for the Army for two years running an Army reserve center. He was transferred to Ft. Leonard Wood as a post security officer. Upon resigning from the Army Reserves, he went to work for Burrough Corp. selling large computer systems to banks and large corporations out of Joplin and Little Rock, Ark. He was employed there for nineteen years, then he moved his family to the family’s Missouri century farm in Sarcoxie. He bought the Foster Insurance Agency in Sarcoxie and sold insurance and worked doing taxes and bookkeeping. He also became an agent for the Missouri License Bureau, which he and his wife Jerry ran for twenty years, retiring in 2007. He was a member of the Joplin Rotary Club for several years. Upon moving to Sarcoxie he joined the Sarcoxie Lions Club, where he was a member for thirty years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Sarcoxie and the Sarcoxie Golf Club, where he was an avid golfer.
He married Geraldene Atkinson of Springfield, March 19, 1960. They had four children, Tracy Ann Yount (Mark) of Joplin, Tara Lynn Boening of Danvers, Mass., Dawn Marie Horrell of Sarcoxie and David Horrell (Kim) of Sparta; five grandchildren, Steven Yount (Rachel) of Ft. Mill S.C., Scott Yount (Courtney) of Joplin, Samuel Yount (Audra) of Lancaster, Ca., Kelly Burgess (Tyler) of Joplin and Molly Horrell of Sparta; six great grandsons and one great granddaughter.
A memorial service with full military honors will be held at the First United Methodist in Sarcoxie at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 3, 2017 with Pastor James Yost officiating. The family has requested that memorial donations be given to the Sarcoxie Lions Club and may be left at the funeral home.
