(From Parker Mortuary)William James Stewart, age 74, of Joplin, passed away on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at Mercy Hospital in Joplin. Born on May 1, 1949, in Ayr, Scotland to the late James and Mary Jane (Jensen) Stewart.
As a teenager, William relocated to New York City, where he quickly adapted to the hustle and bustle of American life. His dedication to his adopted country was evident when he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving with honor and distinction. His courage and resilience were truly tested during his time as a POW in the Vietnam War.
William was best known for his handy nature, a trait that allowed him to fix nearly anything with his hands. This skill was not just practical but also a source of great joy for him. His interest in craftsmanship was most evident in his making and collecting knives, a hobby that showcased his attention to detail and appreciation for the artistry involved in their creation.
William enjoyed the outdoors; fishing was a pastime that allowed him to connect with nature while also providing an opportunity to tinker with fishing poles and reels.
Survivors include his good friends, Michael Bodine, Doug Keeney, Dave Hunt, Tyler Mitchell, and Matthew Bodine, all of Joplin; his former wife, Mari Hallum, of Eau Clair, WI; and his beloved furry best friend, Flurr.
Military honors will be held at a later date.
Cremation arrangements are under the personal care and direction of Parker Mortuary, Joplin.
