Mary Ann Carlson

Mary Ann Carlson, known to many simply as Mary Ann, passed away on March 31, 2026, in Joplin, Missouri, at the age of 79.

Mary Ann was born on September 3, 1946, in Arkansas City, Kansas, to the union of Lieonel Jack and Esther Louise (Fear) Kemp, and she lived a life marked by devotion, hard work, and love for those around her. She carried herself with grace and kindness, and she was known as a loving woman who gave generously of her time and heart to her family, friends, and community.







Mary Ann worked for many years as a housing manager for Bell Management, where she was honored with Manager of the Year for her dedication and excellence. She also spent several years working for EFCO and Wells Aluminum. In addition, she served as a manager for Dollar General, worked as a tax preparer, and spent time as an over-the-road truck driver. No matter the position she held, Mary Ann was a devoted employee who took pride in her work and approached every responsibility with determination and strength.

Family was central to Mary Ann’s life, and she treasured every moment spent with those she loved. She is survived by her husband of forty-two years, Thomas Carlson of Wentworth, Missouri; her daughter, Tawnya Watkins and her husband, Michael, of Wentworth, Missouri; her son, Walter Cunningham and his wife, Daniele, of Little Rock, Arkansas; her sister, Vicki Edwards and Lonnie of Frankfort, Kansas; and Pat Graham, her sister of the heart, of Monett, Missouri. She also leaves behind seven grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and a host of other family members and friends who will forever cherish her memory.








Mary Ann was preceded in death by her son, Steven Cunningham; her granddaughter, Crystle Kimbler; her brothers, Gary Kemp, William Kemp, and Jack Kemp; and her sister, Viola Williams. Though her family mourns her passing, they take comfort in the many memories they shared and in the lasting example of love and perseverance she leaves behind.

She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, and those moments were among the greatest joys of her life. Her presence brought warmth and comfort to those around her, and her loving nature left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her. Mary Ann will be remembered for her strong work ethic, her devotion to her loved ones, and the kindness she shared so freely throughout her life.

Mary Ann’s life was a reflection of care, commitment, and resilience. She faced life with strength and carried herself with a spirit that inspired others. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her, and her legacy of love will continue through the generations of family she helped shape and nurture.


A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 25, 2026 at the home of her daughter.




Cremation arrangements are under the personal care and direction of Hedge-Lewis-Goodwin Funeral Home in Webb City, Missouri.
