Sue Fortenbaugh

Eleanor “Sue” Fortenbaugh, 83, of Joplin, Missouri, passed away on March 28, 2026 at home.

Sue was born May 14, 1942 in Topeka, Kansas to Alvin and Evelyn (Webb) Keen. She lived in the Joplin area for the past 62 years, moving from Topeka, Kansas.

She married Kenneth Fortenbaugh on June 16, 1962 in Topeka, Kansas. He preceded her in death on September 15, 2009. 






Additional survivors include a son, Keith Fortenbaugh, Joplin; two daughters, Sharon Royle (Chadwick), Joplin; Krista Judd (Jim), Happy, Texas, eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren; two sisters, Carolyn Desormiers, Silver Lake, Kansas; Helen Derby, Topeka, Kansas. Sue was preceded in death by her parents.

She took a cake decorating class which turned into an awesome side hustle and taught a friend so she could create cakes too. Sue made many birthday, wedding and custom cakes for friends, family and more.

Sue was a hard worker and worked many jobs throughout her lifetime. Southwestern Bell, Western Auto, Sambos, Twin Hills Country Club, Holiday Inn and lastly Herbs for Life. She was most proud to graduate from Vatterott college with an accounting degree. That led her to move from a server in the Holiday Inn coffee shop to work in their accounting department. She officially retired in 2004.








Sue spent her retirement years with family and friends. She really enjoyed feeding the birds. Hummingbirds during the summer and songbirds during the winter. She also watched many games - Kansas City Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals.

Sue’s sharp witt and keen sense of humor will be missed by all who knew her.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, April 17, 2026 at 4:00 p.m. at Calvary Chapel of Joplin, 4899 E. 7th St. Joplin, MO 64801.

Cremation arrangements are under the special care and direction of Parker Mortuary.
