Dorothy Marie Grotjohn, age 88, Neosho, passed away on Friday, June 21, 2019 at her home.
Dorothy was born May 27, 1931 in Joplin, daughter of the late Richard Jackson "Jack" Hankins and Pansy Louise Terrell. Pansy passed when she was young, and then Dorothy lived with her grandparents, George Washington Hankins and Mary Emaline Hankins. At age 14 Dorothy moved in with her father, Jack Hankins, and her step mother, Opal Hankins. She lived in Oklahoma and California before returning to Neosho in 1987. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, who loved being involved with all 24 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her first husband, Richard Robert Brotherton, who died in 1952, her mother, father, step mother, and grandparents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Cindy Brotherton, a sister, Virginia Wilson, grandson, Chadwick Hester, and a son-in-law, Greg Kivett.
Survivors include her husband of 66 years, Virgil Grotjohn of Neosho; children, Sarah Malone (Michael) of Bailey, Colorado, Vicki Hester (Jack) of Westminster, Colorado, Linda Kivett of Neosho, Virgie Popejoy (Michael) of Arvada, Colorado, Virgil Garth Grotjohn (Brenda) of Seneca, Missouri, and Richard Grotjohn (Donna) of Neosho; 24 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Lauren Hankins; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, August 3, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. in New Salem Cemetery.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
Dorothy is now soaring high on the wings of Angels. Her smile captivated me and when it was possible I enjoyed my visits with her. Now, as I think of her, all I see is that beautiful smile; I bet she is smiling right now. Love and miss you Dorothy. Until I see you again, God Bless.
