Mary Schwatken

Mary Jane Schwatken, age 85, Joplin, passed away on Sunday, June 9, 2019 at her home.

Mary was born September 16, 1933 in Fort Scott, Kansas, daughter of the late Henry Ayers and Bertha Sauvain Ayers. She worked for years as a switchboard operator at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, and also worked for awhile at the New York Stock Exchange transferring money. She was a member of Park Plaza Christian Church of Joplin.

She married Jack Henry Schwatken on September 25, 1949 in Fort Scott, Kansas. They loved traveling, and enjoyed going to Colorado, and the Gulf Coast. He preceded her in death on February 13, 2013.








Survivors include her children, Linda Schwatken of Joplin, Ron Schwatken and wife, Susan of Valley Center, Kansas; grandchildren, Ryan Schwatken of Pittsburg, Kansas, Adam Schwatken and wife, Kelly of Paola, Kansas, Nicole Puckett and husband, Jason of Douglas, Kansas; great-grandchildren, Emma, Jack, Nonajane, Matthew, Madison, Molly, and Elocin; brothers, Bernard Ayers of Longview, Texas, and Melvin Ayers of Valley Center, Kansas; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be Friday, June 14, 2019 at 1:30 p.m. at the Fort Scott National Cemetery, Fort Scott, Kansas. B.A. Austin, minister, will officiate. Pallbearers will be Adam and Ryan Schwatken. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7-8:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
