Douglas Eugene Hobson, 80, of Monett, MO, passed from this life peacefully on Sunday, June 9, 2019, while at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, MO.
Doug was born on March 9, 1939 in Verona, MO, son of the late Doyle and Vera (Ash) Hobson. He graduated from Monett High School with the Class of 1957. He attended Southwest Missouri State in Springfield, MO and continued his degree, graduating from John A. Gupton of Mortuary Science in Nashville, TN, in 1960.
Doug enlisted in the United States Army in 1961, serving his country honorably until his discharge in 1964. He worked for Sheil Funeral Home in Kansas City, MO for three years, returning to Monett in 1967 to become the owner of Hobson Shoe Store in downtown Monett. In 1980, Doug and Bernadine became co-owners of Buchanan Funeral Home, partnering with Mike and Glenda Hemphill, until his retirement in 2001.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church. He was also a member and past President of the Monett Lions Club, the Monett Jaycees and the Monett Historical Society, as well as a member of the American Legion Post #91 and previously served on the Monett Chamber of Commerce Board.
On March 27, 1959 in Monett, Doug married Bernadine Cantrell. To this union, two sons were born. They were blessed with over sixty years together. She survives.
Additionally, Doug is survived by his sons, Jeffrey Eugene Hobson and wife Debora, of Olathe, KS and Michael Douglas Hobson and wife Brandy, of Joplin, MO; grandchildren, Sara and husband Brandon Marker of Joplin, MO, Jessica Hobson of Freeman, MO, Ryan Douglas Hobson of Springfield, MO, Megan Hobson of Overland Park, KS, Katee Hobson of Pittsburg, KS, Addison Hobson of Joplin, MO; great-grandson, Ares Douglas Marker of Joplin, MO; step-grandchildren, Finley Hall of Olathe, KS and Briana Hall of Seattle, WA; one brother-in-law, James Cantrell and wife Linda, of Springfield, MO; as well as a host of extended family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 12, 2019 at Buchanan Funeral Home. Dr. Bill Cox will be officiating. Interment and military honors will be at the Oakdale Cemetery, Monett. Visitation will be held from 6-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening at the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be made to the First Baptist Church or to the Monett Historical Society in care of the funeral home. Arrangements have been entrusted to Buchanan Funeral Home, Monett, MO.
