Delbert Phipps

Delbert See Phipps, age 91, of Carthage, Missouri, passed away at 5:23 p.m. Saturday evening, December 16, 2017, at Joplin Gardens, where he received outstanding care.

Delbert was born October 21, 1926, at Lamar, Missouri, to John William and Nellie Mae (Baldridge) Phipps. After graduating from Lamar High School, he joined the U.S. Army, serving a year of overseas duty during World War II. He returned home and married his sweetheart, Leota Davis on February 21, 1947. They had shared nearly 54 years together before her passing on December 15, 2000. On September 16, 2002, Delbert married June Lawson and she preceded him in death February 19, 2008. He was also preceded by his parents and two brothers, John Howard and Leroy Phipps.

With a sharp mind and outgoing personality, Delbert excelled in his career as a Credit Union Manager, helping his clients, who quickly became his friends, with savings and loans for 27 years. He was an active and loyal member of Lamar Lodge 292 AF & AM and will be remembered for his leadership skills and the compassionate memorial services he conducted for his Lodge Brothers. He had been a faithful member of Hopewell Cumberland Presbyterian Church for many years and had attended Lamar First Christian Church.

Survivors include a brother-in-law, Lloyd (Mary) Holtzen, Miami, Oklahoma; sisters-in-law, Frieda Davis, Jasper, Marlene Davis, Lamar; many nephews and nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces; a large extended family and a host of friends.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 19th at Daniel Funeral Home. Masonic Rites will be conducted by Delbert’s great-nephew, Kaleb Forkner at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday followed by a funeral service officiated by another great-nephew, Doug Phipps. Burial with military honors will be in Lake Cemetery.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Shriners Hospital for Children in care of the funeral home.
