Betty Bartholomew

Elizabeth June “Betty” Bartholomew age 88 of Pittsburg, Kansas passed away Monday, December 11, 2017 at her home surrounded by her family and loved ones.

Betty was born June 7, 1929. She attended school at St. Mary’s Catholic School and graduated High School in 1947.

Betty graduated from Mt. Carmel Nursing School in 1950. She received advanced training in surgical nursing which was her chosen field for many years.

In 1981, she became the alcohol and drug coordinator at Crawford County Mental Health and was instrumental in bringing awareness to the community related to how addiction affects the family.

She started the first Adult Child group in the state of Kansas, and held numerous workshops and presentations throughout the state and was a guest instructor at Pittsburg State University. Betty retires from the Mental Health Center in 1993, to go into private practice lasting until 2008.

She was known to many who attended her groups as “Mom”, and touched their lives with her ability to guide them to recovery.

She is survived by her daughter, Wylie Zupon and husband Tony of Pittsburg.

Other survivors include a sister, Carol Falletti and husband Donald from Tulsa, OK, a brother Jim Kastler and wife Chris of Joplin, MO, and many nieces and nephews whom she loved and enjoyed.

Betty is also survived by her longtime friend and Business Partner, Bobbie Dillon. Betty and Bobbie were in Private Practice from 1993 to 2008 known as the Bartholomew and Dillon Counseling services.

Betty was the recipient of many awards and accomplishments including:

1981 Woman of the Year-Metro Business and Professional Women

1982 First lady of the year XI PI Sorority

1982 NIAAA Regional Committee Chairwoman on Presentation and Education

1986 Appointment to Kansas State Advisory Council on Drugs and Alcohol

Started first (ACOA) Adult Children of Alcoholics support group in the state of Kansas.

Nationally Certified Alcohol Counselor

1982-93 Presenter of programs, related to addiction, for University of Kansas Health Education Center Southeast region.

Betty’s Irish humor was always beneath the surface, we all enjoyed our laughter. One of her favorite Saints was Saint Blessed Mother Teresa and she often quoted her. She reminded us “We cannot all do great things, but we can all do small things with great love.”

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am, Friday, December 22, 2017 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Fr. Patrick York as Celebrant. Parish rosary will be at the church just before the services. Condolences may be left at www.bathnalyor.com. The family suggest memorials be given to the charity of their choice; these may be left at or mailed to the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Bath-Naylor Funeral Home of Pittsburg, KS.
