Ned Sauer

Henry Edwin "Ned" Sauer, 89, of Girard, died at Wildwood Senior Living in Joplin, MO on February 20, 2022. Ned was born April 11, 1932 in Girard, Kansas, the son of Roy and Margaret (Walsh) Sauer. 

Ned grew up in Girard and graduated from Girard High School. He attended the University of Kansas and was a member of the KU Marching band and Phi Kappa Catholic fraternity. 

He joined the U.S. Army in 1953 near the end of the Korean war and served two years, receiving his honorable discharge in 1955. He resumed his college studies at the University of Texas in Austin and earned a degree in Business Retail Management. 








Ned met his future bride Mary Elaine Curtis at the University of Texas and they married on April 6, 1959 in Austin, TX. Elaine and their son Dwight Sauer both preceded him in death in 2021.

After college, Ned began his career at Sauer’s Department Store in Girard, working alongside his father Roy and uncle Joe Sauer. Ned and Elaine owned and operated Sauer's store until Ned retired in 2002. Ned was a third-generation owner, which was started by his grandfather in 1908. Ned was devoted to his community and was an avid volunteer. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, where he served for many years as a Lector. Ned played his bugle at many military ceremonies and he was in an elite club with the Red Cross by donating over 12 gallons of blood throughout his life. Ned served two terms as president of the Girard Area Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Girard Hospital Foundation Board, the Optimist Club, Jaycees, and volunteered with the Scouts. Ned and Elaine delivered Meals on Wheels and he volunteered his time with Clothes Closet thrift shop in Girard. Ned and Elaine were also members of Community Concerts since 1995 and enjoyed many area performances.

Ned is survived by daughter Greta Zaring (husband Steve), of Fort Collins, CO; his sons, Brian Sauer (wife Phyllis) of Pittsburg, KS; Randy Sauer (wife Pam) of Carl Junction, MO; Doug Sauer (wife Kelly), of Houston, TX; Brad Sauer (wife Michelle), of Siloam Springs, AR; his ten grandchildren, Amanda, Ashley, Alison, Andrew, Claire, Paige, Laura, Annelise, Adam, and Evan; three great grandchildren, and cousin Trisha Sauer.

A visitation will be Tuesday Feb. 22 between 6:00pm-7:45pm at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard, KS. Friends may call after 2:00 pm Tuesday. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am Wednesday Feb. 23 at St. Michael Catholic Church in Girard with Fr. Mike Klag as Celebrant. A Rosary will be prayed before Mass at 9:30 am. Burial will be in the Girard Cemetery.
