(From Clark Funeral Home)Doris Valjean ‘Val’ Castleberry was born November 24, 1930, in Vilonia, Arkansas, one of six children to Jessie and Mamie (Vaughn) Montgomery. She entered into rest on February 25, 2022, in Joplin, Missouri at the age of 91.
Val moved to Neosho in 1964 when her husband, James Castleberry accepted the position of assistant superintendent of schools for Neosho. She was a homemaker and community volunteer.
Val was a fifty-year member of Chapter BT-PEO and a member of the Neosho United Methodist Church. She enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening, flowers, going to garage sales and auctions, playing cards and rumikub. She was a supportive wife, mother and grandmother. She was extremely smart, kind and quick witted. She valued education and encouraged all to further their education and always looked out for the underdog and found ways to make people feel included and valued.
Val was proud to marry James T. Castleberry on June 16, 1950, and move off of the farm, traveling the world and together they had many adventures before his death on May 17, 2011.
Two children, Joe and Becky survive her: eight grandchildren, Rachel, Khannah, Eythan, Jake, Joseph, Ashlie, Erin, and Afton and ten great grandchildren, Bryden, Blake, Brock, Baylor, Avery, Naomi, Bodie, Baylor, Ellie, and James.
In addition to her husband, James, she is preceded in death by a daughter, Donna, three brothers and two sisters.
