Lt. Col. James “Jim” L. Glass, Ret., age 86 of Joplin, Mo., passed away early Saturday, February 13, 2016 at his home following an illness, surrounded by his children.
Jim was born on September 8, 1929 in Jonesboro, In., the son of Merton & Hazel (McCormick) Glass, and, after many travels, became a longtime area resident. He was proud of his 21 year military career that began as a Private in the U.S. Army in 1948 and it culminated as a Lt. Colonel in 1969. Jim served at many military posts in the United States and abroad, attended and taught at the Officer Candidate School, served in combat in Korea and Vietnam. After retiring from the service he worked at the Glenn White Realtors and was involved in home construction. Jim was a founding member and past president of the Sunrise Optimist Club and the Tristate Retired Officers Association, he was also a member of the MSSU Lionbackers Association. Jim always greeted new acquaintances with the phrase, “Where are you from?” then proceeded to note their hometown sports mascot. He loved sports, particularly football and baseball, he regularly attended local high school and college games. Jim never missed any event that involved his children or grandchildren.
He was married to Fern E. McGuire for 45 years, she preceded Jim in death on April 17, 2001. Survivors include one son; Michael Glass and wife Kathy of Neosho, Mo., two daughters; Cheryl Glass of Joplin, Patricia Slifer and husband Stan of Joplin, one grandson; Andrew Holland of Seattle, Wa., and one granddaughter; Jennifer Holland of Joplin.
Jim is to be cremated with the family to receive friends during a time of visitation from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday evening at the mortuary.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to be made to Operation Home Front, which supports active and retired service personnel and their families, in care of the mortuary.
