Ora Katherine Eccher, age 90, of rural Lamar, passed away Wednesday, February 17, 2016 at Truman Healthcare Center where she had been a resident for the past five years.
Katherine was born December 14, 1925, in Neosho County, Kansas, one of the nine children of Karl and Verfie (Reeve) Spurling. On November 29, 1941, she married Henry Abraham Eccher and he preceded her in death. Also preceding were her parents; two brothers, David and Kenneth; two sisters, Shirley and Alice; and a daughter, Donna Weeden.
In addition to being homemaker, Katherine had worked at Big Smith and O’Sullivan Industries for many years. She was a talented seamstress, making dresses and coats for her children. Many benefited from the produce of her large gardens and enjoyed the fried chicken and homemade pies served with love at her table. Katherine enjoyed the outdoors, especially time spent hunting duck and quail and fishing with Henry or her foster children, Jamy and Jesse Sherron. She appreciated all kinds of music and loved to dance. Katherine had been an active member of Calla Rebekah Lodge in Lamar.
Survivors include a daughter, M. Johanna Powell of Houston, Texas; a son, Carl (Jeannie) Eccher of rural Lamar; a son-in-law, VerDale Weeden of Miami, Oklahoma; two brothers, Willie (Carol) Spurling and Floyd Leroy Spurling; two sisters, Edna Haile and Georgie Ann Spurling; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 20th at Daniel Funeral Home with Mike Gage officiating. Burial will be in Barton City Cemetery northeast of Liberal, Missouri.
