Juanita Pflug, age 83 of Joplin, went to her heavenly home at 12:25 p.m. on Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at Joplin Health and Rehabilitation, following an extended illness.
Juanita was born May 29, 1932 in Bona, Missouri to the late Lawrence Herbert Sunderland and Itlia Glaze Sunderland. Due to the Great Depression, her family moved to California and worked in the fruits and vegetables. Her family made this trip with another couple, all in a small truck. The family moved back to Carthage where she graduated from Carthage High School. Juanita then attended Oklahoma Christian College and returned to Carthage to work at Central National Bank. Juanita eventually went to work with Dr. Simmons in Joplin as his assistant for 30 years.
During the time in Carthage, she met what soon became the love of her life, George Pflug, Sr.. They were married on June 13, 1953 in Mt. Vernon, Missouri, almost to celebrate their 63rd anniversary. George survives of their home in Joplin.
To this union was born daughters, Deborah Lynn Rooney of Tulsa, Sharon Lee Boatwright and husband, John of Joplin; a son, George "Phil" Pflug, Jr. and wife, Sara of Oronogo; 5 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren.
Additional survivors include brothers, John Sunderland and wife, Kay of Atkins, Arkansas, Robert Sunderland and wife, Lynn of Pittsfield, Massachusetts; sister, Carolyn Young and husband, Jerry of Nixa, Missouri; nieces, nephews and many extended family.
Other than her parents, she is preceded in death by a brother, Donald Ray Sunderland when he was just a year and half old.
Memorial services are planned for 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 13 at Mt. Hope Church of Christ where Juanita was very active in ministry. Lowell Thomas will officiate.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary, Joplin, Missouri.
