Volley Rose

Volley Howard Rose was born on February 20, 1932 in the family home west of Carthage, Mo.

He was 92 years of age when he passed from this life and into the hands of God on July 1, 2024 in Carthage.

Volley is survived by; his wife Juanita (Atkinson) Rose of Carthage; son, Ty Rose of Joplin, MO; daughter, Gayla Jarrett and her husband Herb of Baxter Springs, KS; son, Justin Rose and his wife Lexi of Hooker, OK; daughter Meridith Johnson and her husband Mike of Joplin, MO.

He was a cherished Grandfather to: Holly and Chris Rhodes; Clifton and Addie Jarrett; Shaynee Gamble; Johnny Johnson; Keenan Cooper; Loryn Rose and Jenna Rose. Great-Grandfather to Brooklyn and Kole Gamble; Andie Jarrett and Rylee Rhodes.

Volley is survived by four siblings; Norma Jean Compton and her husband Bobby; Lois Ring; Carl Lee Rose and his wife Darlene; Allan Rose and his wife Betty and a sister-in-law Pauline Rose.

Volley was a beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by a host of extended family members and longtime friends.

He was preceded in death by: his parents Loren and Nelda (Devers) Rose; his wife Louise (Hollis) Rose; brother Wayne Rose; sister Delores Baker and her husband Ed; brother in law Kenneth Ring.

Volley’s childhood was spent on the family farm in rural Carthage and Mt. Vernon, MO. At age 19, he enlisted in the United States Marines and served active duty in Korea during the Korean War.

Upon returning home from his military service Volley met and married Louise Hollis of Galena, KS. They had two children, Ty and Gayla. Louise passed away in 1961. Volley married Juanita Atkinson of Galena in 1963 and together had two children: Justin and Meridith.

Volley had a career in the telephone industry working initially for Kansas State Telephone and later as owner/operator of Volley Rose Construction.

In retirement Volley pursued his passion and love for vintage tractors. Over the years he owned 10, 3 of which he restored. For twenty years (2003-2023) he drove his tractors in the annual Carthage Maple Leaf Parade.

Volley and Juanita were founding and active members of Southside Apostolic Faith Church in Joplin.
