(From Ozark Memorial Park Crematory)Ivan Lee Obert, a highly adored teacher and lifelong resident of Joplin, MO, passed away Monday, July 29, 2024, at the age of 70 at his home.
Ivan is survived by his wife, Jane Obert (Whyman); his children, Kim Kovach (husband Phil) and Eric Obert (wife Alysia); his sister, Rebecca Boyd; 6 grandchildren (Olivia Obert, Sean Kovach, Addison Obert, Adelaide Kovach, Xander Kovach, and Isaiah Obert); and many nieces and nephews.
Ivan was born in Joplin on January 3, 1954 to Ivan Harold and Alice (Dorris) Obert. He married Jane Whyman on May 12, 1984. He was a graduate of Missouri Southern State University and received his masters from Southwest Missouri State University. He was a highly adored teacher in the Joplin School district for 27 years. Teaching was his passion and his students the inspiration for his career. He taught elementary, middle school, and gifted education.
Ivan’s students were tremendously successful at National History Day and Science Fairs. He was dearly loved by his students, and he loved them, too. He loved Jesus and was involved in many church activities, including playing the piano every Sunday. Ivan’s talents were many: he was an accomplished piano player, loved cooking, volunteered for CASA, and was a beloved husband, father, Papa, brother, uncle, and friend to many. He will be deeply missed by his friends, family, and all who knew him.
A life celebration service will be held on Friday, Aug 2, 2024 at 3:00 PM at Forest Park Baptist Church, 725 S Highview Ave, Joplin, MO. Pastor Brian Jump will officiate. The family will receive friends at the Church from 1:00 – 2:30 PM before the service.
In lieu of flowers, friends may make memorial contributions to Jasper County CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates. All arrangements are under the direction of Ozark Memorial Park of Joplin, MO.
