(From Parker Mortuary)Stephen “Steve” Michael Baich, lovingly called Pee-wee, age 74, of Joplin, Missouri, unexpectedly passed away on Sunday, July 28, 2024.
A man who cherished his family and friends deeply, Steve was a beacon of unwavering kindness, joy, and optimism to those who knew him. He had a hearty laugh and a great sense of humor that could brighten any room. Steve had a remarkable ability to lift up everyone around him and made an everlasting impact on the lives he touched.
Steve was born on January 9, 1950, in East Liverpool, Ohio, to the late Daniel and Mary (Tepovic) Baich. He graduated from Midland High School in Midland, Pennsylvania. Steve then went on to receive his Bachelors degree in Accounting from Robert Morris University. While attending college, Steve worked full-time at Westinghouse, and he also enlisted in the United States Air National Guard. After six years of service, Steve was honorably discharged.
Steve had a handful of professional jobs, but two of the jobs that he was most proud of included his 17 years as a Cost Accountant at TAMKO before retiring in 2015 and his seven years as a bookkeeper at St. Mary’s Catholic Church during retirement. He enjoyed his work, loved numbers, and felt at home whenever he used spreadsheets. In fact, Steve had a spreadsheet for just about everything.
Steve was an avid runner. His love of running began with track and field in high school. His favorite race to run was a half marathon, although he completed several marathons and countless 10Ks. Steve continued to run 10Ks into his 70s. He ran at least five miles every day, including right up to his last days.
Steve also enjoyed watching sports—from college football to track and field events to horse racing. One of his favorite places to watch horse racing was at Mountaineer Park in West Virginia with his big brother, Dan, whom he adored.
Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Debra (Wolfe) Baich; his sons, Craig and Trent Baich (Bonnie) of Joplin; and his brother, Daniel Baich (Michelle) of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; beloved extended family and friends; and his cats, Ari, Bella, and Moka. Steve’s love and support for his family was endless, and he cherished every moment he spent with them.
Steve is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Denise O’Brien.
Funeral services are planned for Thursday, August 1, 2024, at 4:00 p.m. at the Parker Chapel with visitation to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Joplin Humane Society in care of the mortuary. Following the service, Steve’s wishes were to be cremated.
