Jim Lawyer

James William Lawyer, age 90, passed away peacefully on July 13, 2024, in Joplin, Missouri. He was born on January 1, 1934, in Miller, Missouri, to the late Joe and Lora (Fossett) Lawyer.

James graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1951 and later attended barber school, graduating in 1959. He began his career at Whitehouse Barber Shop and eventually opened his own business, Jim's Barber Shop, originally located on 22nd and Main in Joplin, Missouri, before moving it to 10th Street.








On March 30, 1952, James married Mary Elizabeth 'Liz' Aleshire, who preceded him in death on June 14, 2004. Later, on January 19, 2006, he married Maxine Turner, who also preceded him in death on September 9, 2022.

He joined the Air Force in 1953, and proudly served until 1957.

James was an avid bowler and enjoyed attending music shows, visiting casinos, fishing, and going on cruises. 

He is survived by his sons, Larry (Janet) Lawyer and Doug Lawyer; his grandchildren, Joe Lawyer, Jessica (Jarren) Tupper, and Jared (Sierra) Lawyer. In addition to his wives and parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Rex and Richard Lawyer, and his grandson, Matt Lawyer.








A visitation will be held at the Joplin Calvary of the Nazarene Church in Joplin, Missouri, on Thursday, July 18, 2024, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A graveside service will follow on Friday, July 19, 2024, at the Zion Memorial Cemetery in Mt. Vernon, Missouri, at 10:00 a.m.

James will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
