David Gibson

(From Hedge-Lewis-Goodwin Funeral Home)

David William Gibson, 78, of Joplin, Missouri, a cherished father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 19, 2024, after a recent decline in health at Carthage Health and Rehab in Carthage, Missouri. Born on March 15, 1946, in Sioux City, Iowa, to the late David Lawrence and Willa (Bishop) Gibson.

David's early life in Nebraska laid the foundation for his strong work ethic and dedication to his community. After graduating high school in 1964, he was drafted into the United States Army and served his country during the Vietnam War. Upon receiving an honorable discharge, he returned to his roots in Nebraska, where he pursued higher education at the University of Nebraska, earning a bachelor's degree in business.

In 1974, David's life was forever changed when he married the love of his life, Karen Ruth Anderson. Their union was blessed with two wonderful children, Kim and David. David's family was the cornerstone of his life, and he took immense pride in their accomplishments. He was a devoted husband for over forty-seven years to his beloved wife, Karen and a loving father and grandfather who cherished every moment spent with his family.

David's professional life was marked by his unwavering commitment to excellence. He retired in 2009 from Empire Electric Company as the Vice President of Finance after thirty years of dedicated service.

Beyond his professional achievements, David was a man of many interests. He had a passion for working in his yard, where he found peace and solace in the beauty of nature. His neighbors knew him as a friendly face always ready for a chat, and his presence in the neighborhood will be deeply missed. He enjoyed antique cars and was also an avid sports fan, cheering on the Cornhuskers and Kansas City Chiefs with fervor and loyalty.

David's kind and sweet nature extended to all living creatures, and he had a special heart for animals. His kindness was not just an attribute but a way of life that touched everyone around him.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Karen Gibson on November 12, 2022; and his brother, Larry Gibson. David's legacy will live on through his surviving family members: his children, Kim Sommer and her husband, Joel, of Melbourne, Florida, and David Gibson and his wife, Lisa, of Warrenville, Illinois; his three grandchildren, Ellie, Julian, and Miles; his brother, Craig Gibson of Iowa; and a host of other family and friends who were blessed to know him.

Funeral services are 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 26, 2024 at Hedge-Lewis-Goodwin Funeral Home with Chaplain Kathy Whited officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Webb City. Arrangements are under the care and direction of the Hedge-Lewis-Goodwin Funeral Home in Webb City, Missouri.
