(From Parker Mortuary)Michael “Mike” Shaine Ackerson, passed away on July 17, 2024, in Joplin, Missouri. He was born on June 9, 1957, in Abilene, Texas to Frank Ackerson and the late Barbara (Talley) Ackerson.
From the tender age of 16, Mike discovered his calling as a machinist. It was more than a job to him; it was an art form. His unwavering commitment to excellence led him to become the proud owner/operator of Massey Machine Shop in Joplin, where he ensured that nothing left the shop looking imperfect. Mike’s reputation for meticulous workmanship was known far and wide, and his retirement in May 2024 marked the end of an era for the local industry.
Mike’s heart found its match in the 9th grade when he met the love of his life, Paula (Gooch) Ackerson. Their friendship blossomed into a deep and enduring love, leading them to the altar at Byers Avenue United Methodist Church in Joplin on June 16, 1978. Together, they built a life full of shared dreams and mutual respect, a testament to their unwavering commitment to each other.
Beyond his professional achievements, Mike was a man of the outdoors. He found solace in the quiet of fishing, the thrill of hunting deer and raccoon, and the adrenaline of driving race cars. Mike reveled in working on race cars, and serving as a pit crew member for other drivers.
Mike is survived by his devoted wife, Paula Ackerson; father, Frank Ackerson; sister, Janice Redden (Tim), several nieces, nephews, cousins, and good friends.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Barbara Ackerson, and his infant daughter, Michelle Ackerson.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 24, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Parker Mortuary, Joplin, MO. The family invites friends out for a time of visitation on Tuesday, July 23, 2024 from 6:00 p.m.- 8:00p.m. at the mortuary.
