(From Mason-Woodard Mortuary)Murel A. DeMasters, age 91, of Joplin, Missouri, passed away Saturday, July 13, 2024, at his home. Murel was born January 8, 1933, in Joplin, Missouri, to Dudley and Irene (Davis) DeMasters.
Murel met his wife, Beverly “Bev” (Tener) DeMasters on a double date. However, it turned out they were with opposite partners. After changing partners, they were married 71 years and had two daughters, Brenda and Dana. Murel was devoted to his family and delighted in his grandchildren.
Murel served as an Airman in the U.S. Air Force for the 3501st Support Squadron in Waco, Texas, from 1953-1956. Following his service, he was employed at Rocketdyne in Neosho, Missouri, testing rocket and missile engines. The engines from the Apollo 11 launch, that put the first man on the moon, were made and tested in Neosho. Once Rocketdyne ceased operations, Murel continued testing jet engines with Continental, Teledyne and Sabreliner until his retirement in 1996.
Murel was an avid sports fan and enjoyed trips to St. Louis to see his beloved Cardinals and to visit extended family. He also loved driving, taking his family on long road trips throughout the United States.
Murel and Bev passed away together at their home. Murel is preceded in death by his parents and brothers Johnny and Don DeMasters.
He is survived by two daughters: Brenda Phipps (Dale) of Joplin, Missouri, and Dana DeMasters of Kansas City, Missouri; two grandchildren: Jennifer Ziegler (Jay) and Kristin Phipps; two great- grandchildren: Isabella Ziegler and Lily Ziegler; and sibling Sandra Puckett.
The family will receive friends at a memorial visitation from 4:00-6:00pm, July 26, 2024, at Mason-Woodard Mortuary and Crematory.
