Charlotte Roets

(From Carlson-Becker Funeral Home)

Charlotte DeVerne “Charlie” Roets, Salina, KS died peacefully on July 20, 2024 at her home, surrounded by family. She was 92 yrs old. Born October 8, 1931 in Arkansas City, KS, Charlotte was the daughter of Francis F. and Virginia (Robbins) Calvert.

Her family moved to Wichita, KS where she attended Blessed Sacrament Catholic School and graduated 8th grade. She had a beautiful singing voice and sang often at the church. She was also an artist; very creative and gifted.

She married Michael Eugene “Gene” Roets in 1947 and they lived in Wichita many years before moving to Salina in the mid-sixties. Their union was blessed with 14 children. Following her husband’s passing in 1989, she lived in the Solomon area and ran the family business, Roets & Sons Sanitation, which she later sold. She worked as the manager of the Solomon Senior Center before eventually settling back in Salina to live out the remainder of her life.

Charlotte was active at the Sacred Heart Cathedral for many years serving on the Parish Council and as a member of the Ladies Guild. She enjoyed taking charge and helping people. For several years, she greeted and assisted customers at her son Ron’s store “Partridge In A Pear Tree”. In her spare time, she loved to read, play games and complete puzzles, cook/bake and watch “Gunsmoke” relentlessly.

Charlotte is survived by her 14 children: 9 sons, Mike (Pam) Roets, Jr. of Carthage, MO, James (Debra) Roets of Fremont, NE, Bob Roets, Lee (Dixie) Roets, Ken (Sherry) Roets, Ron (Cindy) Roets, Tony (Kacie) Roets, all of Salina, Mark (Dana) Roets of Aurora, CO, and Tim (Robin) Roets of Lindsborg. 5 daughters, Sharon (Rich) Danek of Topeka, Helen (late, Jerry) Halford, Vicky (Robert) Garst, Marie (late Doug, Sr.) Schmidt, all of Salina, and Tina (Larry) Rankin of Abilene, 38 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren, and 15 great-great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Gene, grandsons, Doug Schmidt, Jr. and Jacob Schmidt, and great granddaughter, Alison Miller, her parents, brothers Joe Mattingly, Clarence Calvert, Francis “Eddie” Calvert, and sisters Alberta Calvert and Sarah “Pattie” Roets.

Charlotte, a lady who initially didn’t want to have children, was immensely proud of her family, leaving nothing but beautiful memories. She embodied the best of qualities - unconditional love and strength of spirit. What a legacy she has left.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, July 24, 2024 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Solomon with burial to follow at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Solomon. Parish Rosary will be recited at 6:30 P.M., Tuesday, July 23, 2024 at the church with visitation to follow. The family suggests memorials be given to the Catholic Charities, Sacred Heart Ladies Guild or to Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
