Fred Douffet

Fred Douffet, age 74, of Joplin, Missouri, formerly of Galena, Kansas, passed away Tuesday morning, May 7, 2019, at National Healthcare in Joplin following a lengthy illness.

Fred was born October 6, 1944, in Galena, Kansas, one of two sons born to the late Jewel and Retha (Bailey) Douffet. He moved to Sparta, Illinois, and graduated from Sparta High School in 1962. Following high school, Fred attended Belleville Barber College and graduated in 1964. He started his career at a small barber shop in Fairview Heights, Illinois.

On April 21, 1973, Fred was united in marriage to Dorothy Herbert, a childhood friend of his, and they resided in Illinois for a period of time before relocating to Galena, Kansas. After his return to Galena, he opened his own barber shop, South Main Barber, which he owned and operated for 35 years.

Fred was a true man of God and unwavering in his faith. He was a member of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Miami for 33 years and a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Joplin for the last 10 years. He was always active in his church and served as an elder at both. Fred loved people. He had a personable soul and always extended a welcoming ear to those that needed someone to confide in. He loved watching old westerns and The Waltons. Fred will be remembered for his gentle ways and for making all the men in town look dapper during his devoted barber days.








Fred is survived by his wife of 46 years, Dorothy Douffet, of the home; his aunt, Rayma Eckler; many nieces and nephews as well as a host of extended family and friends.

Funeral services for Fred are 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 10, 2019, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Joplin with Pastor Gregory Mech officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Galena, Kansas. Those honoring his life by serving as pallbearers are Rob Isaacs, Don Meier, Wayne Dickerson, Toby McAllister, Mike Cook and Lars Foss. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Immanuel Lutheran Church Altar Guild in care of the mortuary.

Arrangements are under the personal care and direction of Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary, Joplin, Missouri.
