George Mehnert

(From Parker Mortuary)

George Edward Mehnert, Jr., passed away at 79 on Thursday, May 16, 2019.

He was born at home in Logan, Oklahoma, April 15, 1940. He was the son of George Edward Mehnert, Sr., and Deborah Ruth (Knowles) Mehnert.

George grew up in the Oklahoma Panhandle and Amarillo, Texas. He graduated from high school in Darrouzett, Texas, in 1958. George started his career as a stocker in a plumbing warehouse and retired from Joplin Supply Company in 2006 as electrical sales manager after 29 years.

George married Gwendolyn Gail Hethcox in Amarillo, Texas, on August 3, 1963.

He is survived by Gail, their four children, and five grandchildren – Cynthia Strother, husband Jay and their children Garrett and Claire of Arlington Heights, Illinois; Richard Mehnert, wife Diana and their children Brock and Austin of Bella Vista, Arkansas; Kenneth Mehnert and wife Liz of Sand Springs, Oklahoma; and Tiffany Toft, husband Jeffrey and their son Leo of Chicago, Illinois. He is also survived by his aunt Eula Knowles Collinsworth of Perryton, Texas and uncle Bryan and wife Pat Knowles of Clarendon, Texas.

George loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed working on old cars, taking road trips, fishing the opening at Roaring River, relaxing at Table Rock Lake, and, of course, his dogs. He had a passion for sports of all kinds – whether the St. Louis Cardinals, NFL Sunday, the AKC Dog Show, or his children’s competitions.

He was known for his dry sense of humor, drinking coffee out of his souvenir mug collection, searching out new and delicious food (and recounting food glories from travels past), and making a mean chili. George wasn’t a man of many words but imparted wisdom on his children, grandchildren, and friends including his favorite: “That’s why they make Fords and Chevys.”

Visitation will be at Parker Mortuary on Monday, May 20, 2019, from 4-6 p.m.
