Shirley Rae Thompson, 80, went to be with Our Lord, Friday, May 10th, 2019. She was born on July 15th, 1938 in Baxter Springs, KS to Olen Stewart and Naydean Morton. She married Earney “ Jim" Thompson on November 8th, 1958 in Oxnard, CA. Her parents, husband and a brother, Frederick Stewart, were there to welcome her as she entered the gates of Heaven.
She is survived by her 4 children, Philip Thompson, Julianne Sample, Joni Cunningham and Deborah (Brent) Thomas; 10 grandchildren, Kari Sue (Elvin) Barchers, Kassie Thompson, Kelley (Brad) Miller, Jamey Smith, Kenny (Kristy) Sample, Steven (Cissili) Sample, Nicholas (Tam) Gordon, Eric (Michelle) Gordon, Evan (Jillian) Thomas and Allie Thomas; 19 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren; her brothers Steve (Marie) Stewart & Larry (Debra) Laney and sisters Sharon Stewart & Anita Valencia; along with many nieces and nephews.
Shirley was a wife and mother first and foremost and loved spending time with her grandchildren. She was the organizer of many family reunions and Backyard BBQ’s that brought our family all together again from the busy lives that kept us apart far too long. She loved genealogy and spent many years researching and tracing family back as far as the mid-1600s. She had a passion for gardening and loved scrapbooking.
Shirley was a member of Harmony Heights Baptist Church in Joplin, MO. and enjoyed the years she had singing in the church choir.
Family gathered together Sunday, May 12th, 2019 at her home to remember and celebrate her life. Internment services for Shirley and her late husband who passed on April 18th, 2014, will be held on Tuesday, May 14th at 1:00 pm in Osborne Cemetery, Joplin, MO. Pastor Charlie Burnett will officiate.
Arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
