(From Clark Funeral Home)Walter Bernard Petersen, 87, entered into eternal rest on August 31, 2026, at Freeman Neosho Hospital following a lengthy illness. He was born on July 29, 1939, in Martin County, Minnesota, to Walter and Anna (Luebenow) Petersen and was one of eleven children. Walter married Karon Huston on August 29, 1964, in Omaha, Nebraska, where they raised their two children together.
Education, Military Service, and Career
Walter graduated from high school and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Accounting. He served six years in the United States Army and was honorably discharged. During his career, he owned and operated Hospital Financial Services, Inc., serving small rural critical-access hospitals as an accountant for 45 years. He was especially proud to be the first recipient of the Nebraska Hospital Association Fellow honor.
Interests and Faith
In his spare time, Walter enjoyed running and completed three marathons and a half marathon within eighteen months. He loved animals, especially cats, and, as a proud Nebraskan, was an avid fan of the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers sports teams. Above all, Walter loved his Lord and Savior. He was active in church ministries throughout the years and served faithfully as a church leader.
Survivors and Family
Walter is survived by his wife of 62 years, Karon, and their two children, Kari Petersen of Neosho, Missouri, and Dustin Petersen of Omaha, Nebraska. He is also survived by three grandsons, Tyrone Amos, Chris Petersen, and Vince Petersen; one sister, Maryann Hansel; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members. He was preceded in death by eight brothers and one sister.
