Fred E. Knell, 89, rural Carthage, passed away Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at his home after a long illness. Fred Edward Knell was born March 14, 1926 in Sarcoxie, MO, a son of the late Edward Pratt Knell and Mary Opal Siler Knell. He married Nelly Anne Bowman on July 7, 1945; she preceded him in death on March 5, 2001. He married Barbara Lynne Bowman on April 11, 2003 in Miami, OK; she survives.
Mr. Knell started farming in 1946 and bought a farm northwest of Carthage in February, 1950. He founded the Knell Roofing Co., later known as Roof Care Center in 1972. He owned the business until June 30, 2014. Fred was a member of the Mt. Moriah Methodist Church, northwest of Carthage, attended the National 4-H Club Congress in 1947 and received the Jasper County Balance Farming Award in 1957.
Additional survivors include a daughter; Melody (Nathan) Durant, Donna, Texas; two sons; Lloyd (Susan) Knell, Pittsburg, KS and Fred Allen (Annie) Knell, Carthage; one brother, Wendell (Imogene) Knell, Ozark, MO; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Opal Knell; his first wife, Nelly Anne (Bowman) Knell; daughter, Sharon Ann Knell; two sisters, Deloris Nixon and Nira Emma Jean Knell; one brother, Frank W. Knell; and granddaughter Sarah Beth Durant.
Visitation will be held from 3:00 – 4:00 PM, Sunday, August 9 at Knell Mortuary, Carthage. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday August 10 in the Knell Mortuary Chapel. Rev. Nathan Durant will officiate. Interment will be in Park Cemetery, Carthage. Memorial gifts are suggested to Mt. Moriah Methodist Church in care of Knell Mortuary, 308 W.
