(From Parker Mortuary)Mary Lou Williams, 80, of Joplin, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by loving family on Friday, July 23, 2021.
Mary Lou was born July 5, 1941 in Joplin. She was raised by her grandparents, Frank and Lizzi May (Lamb) Piquignot, after losing her father, Carl Sharp, at a young age.
On April 13, 1957, Mary Lou married Merle Williams and together they had four children. She worked as a dedicated homemaker, raising her children and caring for the home.
Mary Lou was extremely talented in expressing her artistic capabilities. She was an avid poetry writer and a member of the National Poetry Society, having won many awards and even having some of her written pieces displayed at the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. Mary Lou also enjoyed making costume jewelry and dressing up her outfits with her creations. She appreciated the pretty things, from interior design to her flower gardens, and also loved to frequent the local flea markets and garage sales.
To know Mary Lou was to love her. She had a servant’s heart, constantly giving to those around her. Mary Lou was a strong foundation for her family and always there when she was needed. She was a Christian, always placing her full trust in God and letting her faith lead the way. Mary Lou was a wonderful mother and grandmother and a true light in this world. She will always be missed.
In addition to her father and grandparents, Mary Lou was preceded in death by her husband, Merle, in 2017; her son, Donald L. “Donnie” Williams, in 1989; her sister, Geri Edwards; and two dogs, CoCo and Maggie.
She is lovingly survived by her children, Connie Carpenter (Steve) of Joplin, Robin Clemons of Joplin, Merle Williams, Jr. (Roberta) of Green Cove Springs, Florida, and her beloved Pomeranian son, Teddy; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; as well as a host of nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.
Mary Lou’s favorite verse was John 3:16 and she encouraged everyone to remember this always: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
A celebration of Mary Lou’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 27, 2021 at Osborne Memorial Cemetery with Pastor Don Carden officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
