(From Mason-Woodard Mortuary)John F. Henry was born May 19, 1924, in Pittsburg, Kansas to John and Thursey Box Henry. He went to his heavenly home on January 20, 2023, at the age of 98 years old.
He served in World War II, receiving the rank of staff sergeant. He served as a radio field operator attached to an artillery unit. He was in all five major European campaigns and received four bronze stars for his service.
John moved to Joplin in 1945 following the war. He married Gettius Short in 1947. They had four children, Toni, Michael, Earl, and Ruth. He was a lifelong friend and neighbor to Edgar and Mary Meyer. John helped Meyer Battery in 1983 after he retired from Yellow Freight as an over the road driver.
John married Mary Meyer in May 2008, but they were partners for 38 years, doing almost everything together. “He was the best friend I ever had,” said Mary.
John was noted for his hard work ethic, sense of humor, and a family man. He enjoyed eating breakfast at Joplin cafĂ© with the “liars club”. He shared many stories and experiences with his friends and children. He enjoyed working word search puzzles, keeping his mind sharp and active. He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 52. Besides helping Meyer Battery, he worked a number of years for Bob Owens Auto Center.
The biggest tribute to his life were made by his Grandchildren. “I credit him with my good work ethic and for helping me become the man that I am”. “He was the beloved backbone of the family. He was loved by many and respected by even more. I will always remember the values he instilled in us. As a WWII veteran, truck driver, family man, and friend, he is a true hero of mine. Thank you for every second we had together, both are true expressions of how all the family feels.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gettius, son Michael, granddaughter Gean-Marie Meyers, and great-granddaughter Zoe Henry.
Survivors include his wife Mary Meyer of Joplin, and the following children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren that loved him greatly. Toni Millers children and grandchildren, Brad Ardrey (Bonnie, James, & Alex), Mischa & Tony Philips (Connor), Paul & Alisha Andrews. Michael Henry’s Children and grandchildren are John & Christine Henry (Roslyn), Steven & Kimberly Henry (Stephanie & Joshua), Michael & Crystal Henry (Mikayla & Asher), Travis & Adriana Henry (Briar). Earl and Mary henrys children, Maureen & Chris Keck, Ben & Vicki Henry. Ruth and Frank Ingrams children, Leasue Meyers & Teresa Meyers. Terry and Tina Meyers children, Kyleigh Felker, and Tyler & Ashley Meyer. Kay and Jack crows children and grandchildren, Jason & Misty Newton(Becker & Barrett), Ashlee Newton.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for contributions to be made to St. Jude's Hospital or Disabled American Veterans Chapter 52.
