Martha Fish

(From Mason-Woodard Mortuary)

Martha Jean (Gamon) Fish, age 90 of Joplin, Missouri transitioned from life on this earth into the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Wednesday, January 25, 2023.

Martha was born on May 28, 1932 in Washington, Iowa to John and Helen (Henderson) Gamon. She was the middle of three children, a younger sister to Harold, and an older sister to Wayne. She attended Iowa State Teacher’s College (now University of Northern Iowa) in Cedar Falls, Iowa and became a public school teacher, teaching first in Mediapolis, Iowa and later in Grinnell, Iowa.

In Grinnell she met and on August 10, 1958 married Fred Fish, a widowed minister with three small children, instantly becoming mother to her three children: Melody, David, and Jacque. She enjoyed teaching but gave it up to become a full-time mother of three.

She never stopped using her gift of teaching in the context of the congregations where her husband served, also using her talent to play piano and organ. Later in life, she taught herself ASL to serve hearing-impaired people in the church, worked as a seamstress, and became quite good at doing pencil drawings. She was her husband’s partner in ministry for the more than forty-four years they were married.

She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, her husband, Fred, and one great grandchild. She is survived by her daughter, Melody Voss, and husband Bob (Sherman, Illinois) their children, Christina Snyder and husband Jesse (Robinson, Illinois), Rachel Fulk and husband T.J. (Greenwood, Indiana); her son David Fish and wife Rose (Carl Junction, Missouri), their children, Charissa Bellinger and husband Kyle (Indianapolis, Indiana), Greg Fish and wife Emily (Mount Vernon, Missouri), and Kim Duncan and husband Kyle (Broken Arrow, Oklahoma); her daughter Jacque Gage and husband Mike (Joplin, Missouri), their children, Aaron Gage and his wife Natalie (O’Fallon, Missouri), Elisabeth Benbow and husband Alex (Carthage, Missouri), and Katie Ball and husband Josh (Joplin, Missouri). She is also survived by twenty-two great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be given to Solace House of the Ozarks, or Good News Productions International (GNPI), both of Joplin, Missouri.

Funeral services have been scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 30, 2023 at the Mason-Woodard Chapel. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery in Webb City. The family will receive friends during a time of visitation from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. the day of the funeral.
