Bertha Sargent

Bertha “Bert” Sargent, age 85 of Webb City, Mo. passed away on Sunday August 31, 2014 at Mercy Hospital in Joplin, Mo. following an illness. Bert was born on October 17, 1928, in Webb City, the daughter of Richard and Katie (Butts) McCormick. She has been a lifetime area resident, graduating from Webb City High School in 1946. Bert worked as a nurse for St. John’s Regional Hospital for many years before retiring in 1994, following her retirement she worked at the Webb City Wal-Mart as a greeter until 2011. She was a member of Peace Tabernacle in Joplin.

She married Melvin L. Sargent on May 18, 1947; he preceded her in death in 1985. Bert was also preceded by her parents and her brothers and sisters. Survivors include two sons; Melvin D. Sargent and his wife Beverly of Carl Junction, Mo., Jimmy Sargent and his wife Natalie of Joplin, one daughter; Saundra Oetzel and her husband Gregg of Joplin, 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services have been scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 4, 2014 at the Hedge-Lewis Chapel, with Frank Buchanan, Sr., officiating. Burial will follow at Webb City Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home during a time of visitation on Wednesday evening from 6 to 7 p.m. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hedge-Lewis Funeral Home.
