Rhonda Thompson

Rhonda Diane Thompson, 59, of Pittsburg, passed away Sunday morning, August 31, 2014 near Opolis, Kansas.

 She was born December 21, 1954 at New Orleans, Louisiana, the daughter of Richard and Wanda (Bigelow) Sell. She graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1973. She obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in social work from Pittsburg State University and her Master’s Degree in social welfare from the University of Kansas. She was united in marriage to Robert Thompson at Timmons Chapel on May 9, 1981. He survives at the home.

She was a member of College Heights United Methodist Church. Mrs. Thompson was a Social Worker for The Farm Incorporated for the past 17 years. She was a tireless worker for children. That desire led her to volunteer for the TFI golf tournament, bowling tournament and anything else that helped foster children and adoption programs. She also was a mentor for all those around her with a positive Christian attitude. She was a life-long Girl Scout and Girl Scout leader. Most recently, she was a committee member working for the preservation of Camp Mintahama in Joplin. She was currently training for the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) 150, an annual fund raiser for that organization. She was a constant advocate for MS and was an encourager, especially to those who shared that disease.

 Rhonda was very dedicated to her family. She was a loving mother, super grandma, devoted wife and caring daughter and sister. In addition to her husband, Robert, she is survived by a son, Brian Thompson and his wife, Keri of Girard, KS; a daughter, Amy Rosete and her partner, Jayson Korte of Arma, KS; her mother, Wanda Sell of Frontenac, KS; a brother, Bob Sell and wife, Julie of Topeka, KS; and four grandchildren, Stormi Rosete, Ramiro Rosete III, Alyssa Rosete, and Genesis Korte and several aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded by her father, Richard Sell.

 Services will be 10:30 am Saturday (Sept. 6) at the Brenner Mortuary with Stephanie Brown officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday to sign the register book. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
