Leonard I. Doss, age 73, Carl Junction, passed away at 6:40 p.m. Sunday at Freeman West Hospital.
Leonard was born March 31, 1945 in Walla Walla, Washington to the late Kenneth I. Doss and Freda Woods Doss and had lived in the Joplin area all of his life.
Leonard worked in the restaurant and grocery supply business for most of his adult working life. He had worked at the original Fred and Red's Cafe, Milgrim Grocery, Piggly Wiggly, Schifferdecker Golf Course and Feerick Candy Company. He worked fourteen years as a distributor for Pepperidge Farms and had most recently worked for Champion Feed Store.
He loved sports. Leonard played fast pitch softball for years and was an accomplished pitcher. He was a longtime member and past treasurer of the Schifferdecker Golf Course. In 2010, Leonard was inducted to the Joplin Sports Hall of Fame and is best known for his 307 yard hole-in-one on Schifferdecker's hole #16. Some say it is a feat that may never happen again.
Leonard loved the Lord. He was a former member and elder at College Heights Christian Church and current member at Christ's Church of Oronogo. He loved his family with all his heart and will be missed by everyone who knew him.
Leonard married Carol Asbell Kollmeyer on February 25, 2009 in Miami, Oklahoma. She survives at the home.
Additional survivors include two sons, Kevin Doss, Orange, Texas, Darrell Doss and wife, Sarah, Lamar; a stepson, Kevin Kollmeyer and wife, Minnie, Carthage; a stepdaughter, Christina Chartier and husband, Brian, Jasper; three brothers, Fred Doss, Joplin, Denny Doss, Wichita, Kansas, David Doss, Baxter Springs; sister, Judy McDaniel and husband, Eddie, Ozark, Missouri; grandchildren, Hallee and Jaycee; and several step grandchildren and step great grandchildren.
Memorial services are planned for Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Christ's Church of Oronogo. Darrell Doss, Ken Ansley and B.A. Austin, ministers, will officiate. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until service time Saturday at the church.
Arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
