Velma Janelle (Liming) Wood, of Arcola, MO, passed away at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, MO on August 12, 2018 surrounded by her children.
She was born in Joplin, MO on November 19, 1937 to Sam and Ruby Liming. Velma lived in Oklahoma and California before the family settled in Easton, KS. She played high school basketball and at 16, many newspaper articles at the time referred to her as a “feminine Bevo Francis.” Velma once scored more than 50 points in a single game. She graduated from Easton High School in 1955.
Velma lived in Peculiar, MO for many years while her five children were growing up and she was always very supportive of their many school activities and sports, sometimes attending several games a night. Velma worked in the kitchen at Peculiar Elementary School, drove a school bus for the school district and eventually went to work at Western Electic/AT&T in Lee’s Summit, MO.
She enjoyed fishing, sewing, crocheting, camping, and genealogy research. In 1989, Velma and her husband moved to Arcola, MO and built their home near Stockton Lake. There they enjoyed fishing, gardening, their grandchildren and traveling the country with friends. She was a member of the local Democrat Club and was an officer before she passed. Velma was employed at O’Sullivan Furniture Company in Lamar, MO and retired after ten years of service.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenny Wood; one son, Richard Crook; and one brother, Robert Liming.
Velma is survived by her sister, Trava Purvis of Enid, OK; her daughter, Vicky (Doug) Evert of Leslie, MI; son, Roger (Gloria) Wood of Louisburg, KS; son, Rodney Wood of Paola, KS; and her daughter, Tracy Dugger of Leavenworth, KS. She is also survived by twelve grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; her sister-in-law, Judith Liming; and many more relatives, friends, and others who also called her Mom and Grandma.
According to her wishes, Velma has been cremated and a celebration of her life will be held at Greenfield Funeral Chapel in Greenfield, MO on Monday, August 20, 2018. Burial will follow in Vaughn Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday at 11:00 a.m. with the service to follow at Noon.
