Velma Loraine Holz, age 93, Loma Linda, Missouri, passed away at Freeman Hospital at 3:13 p.m. Sunday, April 21, 2019.
Velma was born December 14, 1925, East of Jasper, Missouri to the late Ralph Z. Schell and Velma Withers Schell. She was raised on a farm but resided in Joplin, Missouri for most of her adult life.
Velma colored photographs for both Hasting Studio and Mosler Studio. She was the principal's assistant at Irving Elementary School, leaving there to become the librarian at Forest Park Baptist Church. After twenty five years, she retired and was appointed librarian at Fellowship Baptist Church. She also worked several years at the Missouri Welcome Center in Joplin.
She married Fred C. Holz, Jr. on January 19, 1949 at Zion Baptist Church, Jasper, Missouri. He preceded her in death on April 10, 2000. For many years, they worked with the Spring River Baptist Association and the Southern Baptist Convention, establishing many area church libraries.
Survivors include sons, Ronald Ray Holz, Montrose, Colorado, Gregory L. Holz, Joplin, David Lynn Holz, Bixby, Oklahoma; siblings, Patsy Stump, Victorville, California, Carolyn Rowell and husband, Derwood, Benbrook, Texas, Kay Goswick and husband, Johnny, Joplin, Ray Schell and wife, Kay, Duquesne; grandchildren, Brent Holz and wife, Gyla, Neosho, Nick Holz and wife, Kim, Saginaw, Jonathan Holz and wife, Sarah, Goodman, Carrie Etzel and husband, Dennis, Topeka, Kansas, Fred Carl Holz and wife, Sarah, Grandview, Missouri, Joy Holz, Lincoln, Nebraska, Ronald Ray Holz, Jr., Lawrence, Kansas; great grandchildren, Ethan Holz, Allyson Holz, Kathryn Holz, Lauren Holz, Asmund Etzel, Wystan Etzel, Raedan Etzel, Aldwyn Etzel, Eldric Etzel; a brother-in-law, Herman Holz and wife, Velma, Carthage; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services are planned for Saturday, May 25, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Fellowship Baptist Church. Rev. Rex Wakefield will officiate. The family will receive friends Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the church. Graveside services are planned for Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Mitchell Cemetery, East of Jasper, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Fellowship Baptist Church Library, in care of Parker Mortuary.
Arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
