John Robbins

John Winston Robbins was born July 10, 1947 in Neosho, Missouri, to Maurice and Mae Robbins. He died at home surrounded by his family in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on Sunday, October 6, 2019 at the age of 72.

John graduated from Triway High School and went on to complete an Associate's Degree from Crowder College, a Bachelor's Degree from Kansas State University and a Master's Degree from Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas.

John served as a radioman on the USS Mount Whitney in the United States Navy from 1969-1973. He additionally served in the United States Naval Reserve for twelve years.






 

He married Teresa Ann Miller on August 2, 1975 and they had two children, Sara and Holly. They made their home in southwest Missouri until 1996, then moving to Jefferson City, Missouri where they lived for 17 years. The retired to Sioux Falls, South Dakota in 2016.

John worked as a teacher and school counselor in the East Newton, Webb City and New Bloomfield public schools, retiring in 2001. He then worked for the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in Jefferson City, Missouri prior to retiring from that agency in 2013. John devoted his life to helping children and their families and his work at DESE helped establish precedents for school counselors in the state of Missouri.

He was an avid reader, particularly interested in various historic periods and enjoyed singing in a Barbershop Chorus in Sioux Falls. He will be remembered fondly for his sense of humor and passion for education.

John is survived by his wife Teresa, daughters Sara Robbins of Lenexa, Kansas; Holly Robins (husband Joshua Sharkey and son Harrison) of Melbourne, Australia and sister, Marilyn Robbins (husband Chris Bjork) of Colorado Springs, Colorado.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Robin Robbins.

John's wish was to be cremated with is remains to be interred in the columbarium at the Neosho Memorial Park Cemetery in Neosho, Missouri. A private memorial will be held in Neosho at a future date.
