Russell Hurtt

(From Parker Mortuary)

Russell Hurtt, age 90, of Joplin, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, at his home.

Russell, son of the late John and Wilma (Thomas) Hurtt, was born on September 12, 1933, in Joplin. After graduating from high school, Russell proudly served his country by enlisting in the United States Navy. He served his country honorably as a Koren War Veteran. After returning, he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Betty Jo Taylor, on August 31, 1958. Together they enjoyed many years until her passing on July 15, 2018.

Russell found his calling in the serenity of nature and the meticulous care of golf courses. He dedicated many years of his life as a golf course superintendent, contributing previously to Twin Hills Golf Course and later at the Baxter Country Club in Baxter Springs. His work was not just a job but a canvas where he combined his love for the outdoors with his professional skills.

He loved the outdoors and when not tending to the greens or ensuring the fairways were in pristine condition, he could often be found with a fishing rod in hand. Russell was a hard working and devoted husband, father, and grandfather and will be missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his children, Debra McCumber, of Joplin, Vicky, and her husband, Dan, of Galena, Russell Eugene Hurtt, of Joplin, and Christopher Hurtt, also of Joplin; one sister, Mary Ann Whiley, of Herington, KS; 11 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Russell was preceded in death by two brothers, Emmit Hurtt, and Kenneth Hurtt; two sisters, Beverly Johnson, and Shirley King; and one grandson, Travis Ferguson in 2007.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 19, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Parker Mortuary in Joplin with burial with full military honors to follow at Osborne Memorial Cemetery in Joplin. The family will receive friends for a time of visitation on Friday, January 19th beginning at 10:00 AM until service time.

Arrangements are under the personal care and direction of Parker Mortuary, Joplin.
