Sam Ammons

"Sam" (Darrel Samuel) Ammons, 91, formerly of Altoona. IA, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 10, 2024 with family at his bedside in Joplin, MO.

Sam was born on August 30, 1932 to Alvie and Florence Ammons in Buena Vista County, IA. Sam married his beloved wife of 46 years, Beverly Ammons, on February 13, 1959; all of whom have preceded him in death.








Sam served in the US Army as a Sergeant in the Korean War, worked for many years at Vylactos Laboratories and eventually retired from Saydel High School in Des Moines, IA.

Sam enjoyed many things but most notably he was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed all sports but football and baseball ranked highest. The Packers, Chiefs, Yankees and Cardinals were amongst his most favorite teams. Other interests include fishing, horse races, coin collecting, traveling and so much more.

Sam is survived by his children, Darrel (LeeAnn) Ammons Jr. of Kelso, WA, Becky Hodges; of Joplin, MO; Wendy (Chuck) Miner of Des Moines, IA. He leaves behind a legacy to an extraordinary number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.








Also preceding Sam in death were his siblings: Forrest Ammons, Lois Lau, Robert Ammons, Ronald Ammons, Mary Lou Sutherlin and two stepsons; Michael and Randy Thiel.

To honor the wishes of Sam, there will be no services held.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary, Joplin, Missouri.
