Richard Eugene Patterson, age 79, of Joplin, Missouri passed away on the 26th day of July, 2019 at his residence following an extended battle with cancer. Richard was born on February 20, 1940 in Joplin, Missouri to Robert L. and Thena Patterson. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Robert Bennett Patterson.
Richard graduated from Webb City High School in 1958. His senior year he was class president, president of the boys’ glee club, captain of the track team and co-captain of the basketball team. He was the conference champion and district champion and medalist at the Missouri State Track Championships in the mile run.
Richard served his country in the US Army, and the Webb City and Columbia National Guard units.
Richard married Jacqueline Ann DeBard on September 1, 1962. Together they raised two children, Grant Regan Patterson and Lindsay Kristen Patterson.
Upon graduation from the University of Missouri, Columbia with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and a Master’s degree in accounting, Richard started his professional career with Price Waterhouse and Company in Tulsa where he obtained his CPA Certificate.
Following several manufacturing financial positions, he joined the Noble Drilling Company in Tulsa as Controller and was promoted to Vice President of Finance and ultimately Vice President of International Operations. He enjoyed extensive travel all over the world, sometimes accompanied by his wife. Following a downturn in the oil industry, he became a partner with Mark Icenogle with Patterson Icenogle, Inc., an investment broker/dealership in Tulsa.
He moved to Joplin to expand this investment business which was ultimately dissolved. The last 15 years he has associated with Southwest Missouri Bank Trust Services as Portfolio Manager and Tax Advisor.
Richard loved the outdoors as evidenced by his love for the game of golf, obtaining a private pilot license, and working in his yard. The last 30 years he has enjoyed making new friends and playing golf at Briarbrook and Twin Hills Country Club.
He has been a long time member of First United Methodist Church in Joplin where he helped in many capacities. He most recently served on the Endowment Committee. He was a kind and generous man.
He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline (Jacquie), his son, Grant Patterson (wife, Jennifer), and daughter, Lindsay. He is also survived by two grandsons, Nathan Patterson and Malachi Comer, and a granddaughter, Paige Jacqueline Patterson. Also surviving is his furry friend, Chauncey.
Pallbearers will be Ron Darby, Sr., Douglas Crandall, Kurt Walker, Dennis Fitzgerald, Mark Icenogle, and Bob James. Honorary pallbearers will be Nathan Patterson and Malachi Comer.
Visitation will be held at Mason Woodard on Monday, July 29th from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Funeral services will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Joplin on Tuesday, July 30th at 10:00 am with burial to follow at Ozark Cemetery.
The family asks that donations go to the First Methodist Church (General Fund), Joplin, Missouri, the American Cancer Society or the Joplin Humane Society and may be entrusted to the mortuary.
