Hilda Marie Matthews (Gaspard), age 92, of Marksville, Louisiana passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 4, 2019. She lived a full life surrounded by love and was the matriarch to multiple generations of family. Her unprecedented sacrifices throughout the years ensured that her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, and friends felt loved and cherished.
Hilda was born by a midwife in “The Old House” in Marksville, Louisiana on March 15, 1927. She was the daughter of the late Amet Joseph Gaspard and Jervinia “Vin” Marie Gaspard (Juneau).
She lived in Marksville until she was 17 years old and then went to work in New Orleans, Louisiana as a telephone operator at the Walnut Exchange. She was a child of God, a devout Catholic, a wife, a grandmother, great-grandmother, a great-great-grandmother, an outstanding cook, a homemaker, and beloved by all.
At 19 years old, she met her late husband, George Frederick Matthews, Sr., at a dance in Marksville, Louisiana. She soon married and moved to Carthage, Missouri. Besides Marksville and Carthage, she lived in New Orleans, Louisiana, Wichita, Kansas, Page, Arizona, Purcell, Missouri, New Iberia, Louisiana and Joplin, Missouri.
Hilda is survived by her sons, George Frederick Matthews, Jr., and Timothy Joseph Matthews, and her adopted grandsons, Roger Amet Matthews and Robert “Bobby” Clarence Matthews. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Kimberli Matthews, Brady Matthews, Corky Matthews, Staci Mathis (Matthews), Tisha Matthews, Crystal Andrews (Borrel), Timothy Matthews, Jr., Joshua Matthews, Megan Morrow (Matthews) and a host of great and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Frederick Matthews, Sr., her daughter, Gail Anne Matthews, and her sons, Roger “DeDe” Dale Matthews and Chester “Jay” James Matthews. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Chester Joseph Gaspard, Elster Joseph Gaspard, Steven Francis Gaspard, Sr., and Bobby John Gaspard. In addition, she was preceded in death by one sister, Lucille Marie Ducote (Gaspard).
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 7, 2019, in the chapel of Hedge-Lewis-Goodwin Funeral Home in Webb City with Fr. Chaz Dunn officiating. Burial will follow at Carterville Cemetery. Those honoring her life by serving as pallbearers are Amet Matthews, Bobby Matthews, Brady Matthews, Corky Matthews, Timmy Matthews and Josh Matthews with Hank Matthews, Parker Matthews, Wyatt Broussard, AJ Matthews, Freddy Matthews, Jamie Ducote and Cody Doucet serving as honorary pallbearers. The family will receive friends for visitation from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Arrangements are under the personal care and direction of Hedge-Lewis-Goodwin Funeral Home, Webb City, Missouri.
