(From Parker Mortuary) John Gregory Cates, age 67, Joplin, passed away on Tuesday, June 22, 2021, at Freeman West after a sudden illness.
John was born November 10, 1953, in Joplin, son of the late John O. Cates and Nona R. (Fagan) Cates.
He graduated from Memorial High School in 1972, and then served in the United States Navy until 1974 where he served aboard the USS Enterprise and was a Yeoman VA 97.
He worked most of his adult life in the Grocery Store business, working for several different stores in the Joplin area, and for Food-4-Less the last 20 years before retiring in 2015. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Carl Junction. He was known for his loving heart and was always helping those in need around him. He will be dearly missed by his family, and all the friends he helped over the years.
Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Tammy M. (Johnston) Cates; daughters, Hope Nicole Cates, and Faith Marie Cates all of Joplin; brother, Steve Cates, and a sister, Karen Goff (Charlie) all of Kansas City, KS; nephew, Kevin Butler of Ottawa, KS.
Funeral service will be Saturday, June 26, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. in Parker Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Bob Simon officiating.
The family will receive friends at Parker Mortuary on Friday from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.
