(From Parker Mortuary) Marilyn Gordon, age 90, Carthage, passed away on Sunday, June 13, 2021 at her home.
Marilyn was born October 12, 1930 in Wichita, Kansas, daughter of the late John W. Green and Peaches E. (Qualls) Green. She grew up in Joplin, but lived in many other states as the wife of a career Marine. She loved seeing new places and meeting new people.
She graduated from Joplin High School, and Joplin Junior College, then received a teaching degree from Missouri Southern State College She later earned her master’s degree in Special Education from Pittsburg State Teacher’s College. She knew from the age of 7 that she wanted to be a teacher and fulfilled that dream by teaching learning disabled children in Carthage for over 40 years. Even after formally retiring, she worked as a very sought-after substitute teacher until in her 80’s.
She was a dedicated member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was currently attending the Carthage Ward. She was a very giving person who was always ready and willing to give of her time and resources to any and all in need. She opened her home to several foreign exchange students and teachers over the years and was always a willing mentor to new teachers. She served in many leadership positions at church throughout her long life.
Marilyn was always busy and eager to go and do new things. She loved to visit with friends and family members and traveled all over the world as often as she could to be with them. She was an active member in the Missouri Retired Teachers Association, and the Class of ’48 Reunion Committee. She was a volunteer at the Carthage Crisis Center, and Carthage hospitals gift shops for over 30 years.
In addition to her parents, Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Richard Kane Gordon, who passed away on August 16, 2007, two brothers, Duane Green and Johnny Green, and her sister, Joan Green.
Survivors include her children, Kristy Stewart of Carthage, Sheryll Judd (Jeffrey) of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Rick Gordon (Patti Lynn) of Mesa, Arizona, and Caroline Hinshaw of Monett, Missouri; grandchildren, Erik Walters, Jaycen Stewart, Audry Bartlett, Alex Judd, Andrew Judd, Rachel Davidson, Rick Gordon, Heather Oder, Stepheny Stevens, and Keaton Fahnholtz; 13 beloved great-grandchildren; a brother, Ralph Green (Helen) of Joplin; numerous nieces and nephews and extended family members throughout the country.
Funeral service will be Tuesday, June 22, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located at 1338 East Fairview, Carthage with Bishop Dale Sneddon and Brett Petersen officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Park Cemetery with her grandchildren serving as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends at Parker Mortuary on Monday, June 21 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to your local school, animal shelter, the LDS Missionary or Humanitarian funds, or Camp Quality Ozarks.
