(From Parker Mortuary)Verlene Atwell, age 82, of Carl Junction, passed away on Saturday, June 19, 2021 at Freeman Hospital West in Joplin.
Mrs. Atwell, daughter of the late Harold and Betty (Whited) Smith, was born on February 7, 1939 in Joplin.
She was united in marriage to James “Jim” Atwell on September 16, 1972 in Galena, KS. He preceded her in death on July 17, 2015. Together they attended and were involved with the Assemblies of God Churches.
Verlene loved music and playing the guitar. She loved playing for the Lord and played in many churches and groups throughout the years. She loved working with her plants, fishing, watching Jimmy Swaggart and Wheel of Fortune. She was employed for several years at Bunny Bread and then later in life as a contract postman, gathering mail at the Joplin airport, along with a few local post offices. Verlene was a devoted and loving wife, mother, and grandmother who lived to care for her family and will be greatly missed by them all.
Survivors include her son, Brandon Atwell, and his wife, Mandee, of Carl Junction; two grandchildren, Brylynn and Callen Atwell, both of Carl Junction; two brothers, Harold Gene Smith, and his wife, Ginger, of Grove, OK, and John Smith, of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Joyce Couch; and one brother, Billy Smith.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 25, 2021 at 3:00 pm at the Christpoint Church in Galena, KS with burial to follow at Osborne Cemetery in Joplin. The family will receive friends for a time of visitation on Thursday, June 25th from 6:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Parker Mortuary in Joplin. Memorial contributions may be made to the Christpoint Church in memory of Verlene and may be entrusted to the mortuary.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Parker Mortuary, Joplin.
