(From Mason-Woodard Mortuary)Donald Gus Burkey, age 84, passed away after a courageous, 34 year long battle with Parkinson’s disease. Don was born January 12, 1937 in Sarcoxie to Ed and Mildred (Holmes) Burkey. He graduated from Diamond High School in 1955, and remained a lifetime resident.
Don married his high school sweetheart, Freda Aubrey on March 29, 1959 in Carthage. They have been married for over 62 years until his passing. Together they had two sons, Darren and Dustin. They lived a long and happy life together while sharing many hobbies.
Don loved farming, raising cattle and bailing hay. He also loved camping and traveling, Texas was his favorite place to go camping.
Don was a member of Silver Moon Church. He did missionary work and took multiple trips to Mexico to build churches. In his spare time, Don was a licensed realtor for over 20 years. He also worked for Atlas ICI, and retired after 30 years of employment there.
He is preceded in death by both parents; by his son Dustin Burkey; brother Leon Burkey and sister Sharon Carlisle.
Don leaves behind his wife, Freda Burkey of Diamond; son Darren Burkey and Glenna of Diamond; granddaughter Ashley Baker and husband Bryson of Joplin, and his dog, Missy.
A Graveside Service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, July 14, 2021 at Diamond Cemetery. A Visitation will be Tuesday at Mason-Woodard Mortuary from 5:00-7:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Silver Moon Youth Camp.
