Ella “Marie” Brewer, age 82, Joplin, passed away at 5:26 p.m. Sunday, August 5, 2018, at her home after a year-long illness.
Marie was born August 16, 1935, in Arcadia, Kansas, to Viva Gazaway. She was raised by her mother and her mother’s second husband, Alvie Brewer, whom she loved like a father. She was baptized as a young adult at Friendship Baptist Church in Joplin.
Nearly deaf since the age of two, Marie became an expert lip reader. She was a member of Local #88, U.F.C.W. for over 20 years. She was a meat wrapper and worked at several local grocery stores in the area, including Foodtown, Thriftway and Safeway. She then worked for the Joplin Police Department for over 25 years.
Marie married Charles Joseph Brewer, Sr. on May 1, 1951, in Joplin. He preceded her in death on April 25, 1995. She was previously a member of the Joplin Elks Lodge.
Marie was also preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
She is survived by a son, Joe Brewer and wife, Connie, of Joplin; two granddaughters, Jenna Ensz and husband, Jeremy, Oklahoma, Jessica Schmidt and husband, Jeff, Kansas; and five great granddaughters, Lily, Chloe, Emmy, Annabelle and Elsa.
Services are planned for Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary Chapel. Interment will follow at Osborne Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time at Parker Mortuary.
Arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
